64: Winning Over the Social Media Gatekeepers with John Gonzalez, Comms Director @neorsd

John Gonzalez is the Communications Manager and Social Media Coordinator for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District in Cleveland. The Sewer District has been actively engaged in social media since 2009, building reliable followings on Twitter, Facebook, and elsewhere to share updates, answer questions, and promote often-overlooked aspects of clean-water work. As an 18-year member of the Sewer District’s communication team, he also contributes to the utility’s public outreach strategy and oversees its internal communications programs.

Top Takeaways

  1. Social media is a serious commitment to both your customers and your organization. Show you take it serious by coming prepared with a solid idea of the strategy, structure, and substance you plan to use regarding social media.
  2. Social media is always on. Make sure your strategy and your people are empowered with the tools and bandwidth required to do social media right. It’s not a M-F, 8-5 gig.
  3. Negative comments are inevitable. Name the elephant in the room and come prepared with a plan to address issues when they come up.
